Eye care in old age
Hearing loss affects an increasing number of people in old age. Hearing loss begins to set in when you are in your 30s. With age, you might not be able to hear high pitched or lower frequency sounds. Older people have difficulty in hearing in a crowded room and may have to ask people to repeat themselves. Noise levels and sounds, over the ears, damage the hair cells of you ear. Increasing deterioration in hearing may require older people to use hearing aid. One organ that cannot escape the effect of old age is your eyes. Referred to as age-related eye disease or (ARED) these can affect your vision in old age. Four major age related eye diseases are glaucoma, cataract, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. People above the age of 65 are more at risk, however these can these eye diseases can start having their affect even earlier and therefore lead to severe vision loss or blindness. Older people interpret every change as a result of old age. However, this may not be so. Double vision, black spots, pain in eyes, sudden loss of clear vision and redness in eyes are all symptoms which cannot be ignored. Just don't wait too long! Act promptly as soon as you detect any difficulty in reading (like reading bus numbers) or any other noticeable changes in vision. Generally it will be a good idea to regularly get your eyes tested like every two years, even if you don't detect any change. As person grows older, he must understand that there are changes which he or she should be ready for. And must be able to distinguish between what is natural and what is unhealthy. Being able to maintain healthy vision is not such an unrealistic goal as long as you look carefully into the inner changes. Even if you are fit and well and not on any medication, it is still to go reguarly to your physician and see what he advices. To take care of your eyes is essential part of your general health especially in old age. With few simple steps you will successfully keep your eyes health and keep them in good condition for a long time. Everyone will have their own pattern of ageing and it is generally linked your genetic makeup. Weak eyesight, hearing loss are some of the common changes with ageing. Many vital organs also become less effective with old age. This makes making healthy lifestyle choice all the more important. Older people should make conscious efforts to exercise, eat a healthy well balanced diet. With proper intake of water, nutrients and oxygen your body will function well for longer time period. Preventive measures can considerably reduce the risk of diseases in old age. With good nutrition, exercise, and regular health care checkups it is easy to preserve good health. Older people should be more aware of their needs both physical and emotional. In old age it becomes all the more necessary to be healthy and active. It is more of a challenge and it is never late to decide to making healthy choices. |
